• [ Social Capital and Economic Performance: A Meta-analysis of 65 Studies - European Planning Studies ] This paper summarizes 15 years of empirical research at various spatial levels on social capital and economic performance. On the firm level, results are unambiguous: there is strong evidence of the impact of social capital on firms' performance. However, the results become less clear for spatial units with a large number of anonymous actors. The contradictory results of studies on national and regional levels can be explained in part by insufficient measures of the main component parts of social capital: social networks and the norms and values distributed among them. • [ Critical social science, pragmatism and the realities of HRM - The International Journal of Human Resource Management ] The notion of the sociological imagination provides inspiration and valuable guidelines for a type of realist research which, in addition to informing people directly implicated in human resourcing activities, has the potential to inform democratic processes as opposed to furthering the particular interests of one segment of society. To do this, it is helpful to adopt a realist and a philosophically pragmatist style of thinking. In line with pragmatist principles, it is argued that we are better placed to get to grips with the realities of human resourcing principles and practices if we conceptualise 'HRM' in terms of labour or employment management generally rather than treat it as just one variant of employment management. It is also important to appreciate the vital connection between HRM and bureaucracy. • [ Are Happier People Better Citizens? by Cahit Guven ] This paper presents evidence on causal influence of happiness on social capital and trust using German Socio-Economic Panel. Exploiting the unexplained cross-sectional variation in individual happiness (residuals) in 1984 to eliminate the endogeneity problem, the paper finds that happier people trust others more, and importantly, help create more social capital. Specifically, they have a higher desire to vote, perform more volunteer work, and more frequently participate in public activities. They also have a higher respect for law and order, hold more association memberships, are more attached to their neighborhood, and extend more help to others. Residual happiness appears to be an indicator of optimism, and has an inverse U-shaped relationship with social capital measures. • [ Investigating Stakeholder Theory and Social Capital: CSR in Large Firms and SMEs ] The concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) has been widely investigated, but a generally accepted theoretical framework does not yet exist. This paper argues that the idiosyncrasies of large firms and SMEs explains the different approaches to CSR, and that the notion of social capital is a more useful way of understanding the CSR approach of SMEs, whereas stakeholder theory more closely addresses the CSR approach of large firms. A twofold consideration emerges. Our research investigates whether nonprofit, religious congregations can benefit from similar initiatives. We based our hypotheses on the Rational Choice Theory of Religion, which was developed by social scientists to bring economic analysis to the understanding of the effects of competition among nonprofit organizations. Using a sample of 250 religious congregations in five different geographical markets, an entrepreneurial orientation is found to be positively associated with organizational performance.
